The LOOP Project Set to Move Forward

SANTA BARBARA, CA: After several months of collaboration with the California Coastal Commission, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission unanimously approved the LOOP for a second time on September 16th to be built in downtown Isla Vista. The LOOP was developed by Mesa Lane Partners as a model for sustainable development and designed for LEED certification. The four-story building consists of retail stores on the ground level, and a mix of housing and commercial spaces on the top three stories that includes a publicly accessible rooftop garden and cafĂ© with mountain and ocean views. To help align the project with local needs, Mesa Lane Partners drew on significant input from the community to create a project that incorporates feature such as affordable units, an innovative car-sharing program, art murals on the building’s sides, and a number of elements to maximize the building’s water and energy efficiency. As a result, over a dozen members of the community showed their support for the LOOP with letters or by speaking at the Planning Commission hearing. Construction is planned to begin next summer.
